The University of New Haven (UNH) is a private university located in West Haven, Connecticut, which borders the larger city of New Haven and Long Island Sound. Combining a liberal arts education with professional training, the University comprises six degree-granting colleges: the College of Arts and Sciences, the Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts, the College of Business, the Tagliatela College of Engineering, the Henry C. Lee College of Criminal Justice and Forensic Sciences, and the College of Lifelong & eLearning for adult and online students.

University of New Haven offers 180 degree programs including

UNH is composed of five colleges: the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business, the Tagliatela College of Engineering, the Henry C. Lee College of Criminal Justice and Forensic Sciences, and Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts. The student-faculty ratio at University of New Haven is 16:1, and the school has 45.1 percent of its classes with fewer than 20 students.

The University awards bachelor's and associate degrees in 55 undergraduate majors; master's degrees in 31 areas of graduate study; and a doctorate in criminal justice. The most popular majors at University of New Haven include: Homeland Security, Law Enforcement, Firefighting and Related Protective Services; Business, Management, Marketing; Engineering; Visual and Performing Arts; and Psychology. The average freshman retention rate, an indicator of student satisfaction, is 79 percent.

Campus and Community

Between its main campus in West Haven and its graduate school campus in Orange, Connecticut, the University is situated on approximately 122 acres of land. The University of New Haven currently houses 35 campus buildings, including new facilities: David A. Beckerman Recreation Center, Soundview residence hall, the Henry C. Lee Institute of Forensic Science, and Westside residence hall.

Situated on about 75 acres overlooking the Connecticut shoreline the main campus is 90 minutes by train to New York City and 2 ½ hours from Boston.

New Haven is a beautiful city located on the northern shore of Long Island Sound. It is considered part of the New York metropolitan area. New Haven served as an important location in the revolutionary war and has many historical landmarks. New Haven is known for an abundance of trees, established theaters, museums, music venues and is also home to Yale University.

The University boasts more than 150 clubs and organizations, and students have access to hundreds of different study abroad programs, including at our own Tuscany Campus in Prato, Italy.

Student news is provided by The Charger Bulletin, a weekly student-run newspaper available in hard copy and online. Students and community members also broadcast on the campus radio station, WNHU 88.7 FM, which is also available online and has won a number of Best College Radio Station awards in local media readers' polls.

University of New Haven students show a commitment to community service through club outreach, the Alternative Spring Break program, the President's Public Service Fellowship program in the summer, and many more initiatives.

Housing and Dining

About 61 percent of undergraduate students live on campus or in University-sponsored housing in 13 different residence halls. First-year students have the option to participate in Living/Learning Communities, which help foster a greater connection to the University of New Haven by allowing students with a common bond to reside together.


Whatever you are in the mood for,  you are covered. The newly designed Marketplace features a wide variety of stations – from Beach Grill and All-Day Breakfast to Holy Habanero and Hearty American – that cater to all tastes. Meals range from old-fashioned comfort foods to those with international flair. Our Simply Serving station caters to those seeking gluten-free, allergy-free, vegan, or vegetarian foods.

UNH offers 5 different meal plans from smaller, commuter plans to unrestricted, unlimited plans ideal for active students and athletes. Some meal plans include flexible dollars that can be spent on campus retail outlets as well.

Sports Programs

 The University of New Haven is a member of the athletically and academically prestigious Northeast-10 Conference and NCAA Division II. Our teams are known as the Chargers, and the University's mascot is Charlie the Charger. The University of New Haven offers 17 varsity sports and we have about 325 student-athletes. Collectively, the University of New Haven's teams have been to the playoffs over 250 times. The Chargers have won conference, regional, and even national championships, and our student-athletes excel in the classroom and community.
