The nine levels of the Intensive English Program are designed to provide university preparation in all skill areas of language acquisition and usage. Test preparatory classes are available per session cycle and writing for academic purposes is emphasized throughout the curriculum. Students are encouraged to speak and practice listening and learning techniques with their instructors as part of their course objectives.
All TLC locations offer the academic Intensive English Program. This program is carefully designed to help you achieve your language learning goals. The full-time Intensive English program meets Monday through Friday. The equivalent of twenty-five, 50-minute lessons is offered each week. Classes include structure and speaking, reading, writing, and core-plus courses. The optional sixth lesson a day may be used for homework, lab, or test study. A TLC instructor is present for this sixth hour study hall. Wellspring recommends the Academic Intensive English program for international students looking to attend university after the language program.
Truman's 140 acres creates, provides, and promotes educational and cultural opportunities for language school students and university students who take advantage of the unique educational and recreational offerings. From the Courtyard Theater and Performance Hall to the 58,000 sq. ft. Student Recreation Center, the campus teems with student energy as seen throughout academic life.
The town of Kirksville, Missouri has a population of approximately 17,000. This number will vary depending on the number of students in town for academic classes. Kirksville is a college town with two major universities of higher learning with the renowned school of Osteopathy neighboring the prestigious and innovative Truman State University (TSU).
Thousand Hills State Park, west of Kirksville, provides an environment where students can enjoy water sports, fishing and paddle boating as well as sightseeing, swimming and cooking out in season. The geography of Kirksville places it nearly equal distances to three U.S. metropolitan cities: Kansas City, St. Louis, and Des Moines, IA, each of which services international flights. Aquatic and amusement parks, zoos, and museums are a part of recreational activities, depending on the metropolitan area. In addition, areas of cultural activity are available, such as those along the Mississippi River to Kirksville’s east in the towns of Quincy, Illinois and Hannibal, Missouri (historic home of Mark Twain). These towns as well as the Jefferson City/Columbia, Missouri area can be reached in 1 ½ to 2 hours by car.

Recreation is a large part of assisting students with their rigors of study life, and TSU offers numerous sporting events for the viewer's enjoyment as well as student clubs and organizations provide for opportunities of general involvement. The tennis courts and soccer field are additional areas where students can take an outdoor break from their study sessions and the Student Recreation Center is an abode for the avid or casual guest.
The Homestay Program is by far the best way to continue practicing English outside of the classroom and learn about American culture. Our staff carefully matches students and families based on mutual compatibility. Many of our families have been participating in the Homestay program for years and are well-trusted.
Homestay includes a private room, partial board per week, transportation by car to and from school and school related activities. Minimum age required for Homestay is 13 years old, unless accompanied by a parent. Normally, one student will be placed per home unless specifically requested by the student or under the following conditions: The students’ native language is not shared, the students’ gender must be the same.
A number of apartments are located in the town of Kirksville and several of them are on the Kirks Tran route. While the center can assist students with check-in at apartments, students are encouraged to perform a quick preview of procedures for renting in the U.S. This is especially important as prices vary and terms of contract and hookups are specific per apartment management.
