All programs at The Language Company are grounded in pedagogically sound principles of second language acquisition and the development of academic literacy in English as a second language. These principles are infused into all classes across all levels and all language domains of listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
All TLC locations offer the academic Intensive English Program. This program is carefully designed to help you achieve your language learning goals. The full-time Intensive English program meets Monday through Friday. The equivalent of twenty-five, 50-minute lessons is offered each week. Classes include structure and speaking, reading, writing, and core-plus courses. The optional sixth lesson a day may be used for homework, lab, or test study. A TLC instructor is present for this sixth hour study hall. Wellspring recommends the Academic Intensive English program for international students looking to attend university after the language program. The classes are small, offering students personal attention. Standard classes include Structure, Speaking and Listening, and Reading and Writing. However, elective classes are also offered.
Edmond also offers Business English. Designed for students who wish to improve their general English skills as well as their ability to use the English language in the Business and Marketing fields. This program will explore business cultural practices and help to improve the student’s communication skills in specific areas of business. The program will include courses in listening, speaking and grammar as well as four, field-specific courses addressing various topics related to the language of business. These will include such topics as Business and Marketing, Leadership and Teamwork, Finance and Accounting, and Correspondence, Reports, and Presentations.
TLC - Edmond has a large student lounge with television and stereo. Complimentary coffee and hot water for tea or soup are offered every day. There are microwaves and refrigerators for the students’ use as well. TLC - Edmond also has an eight-computer lab complete with internet service and a networked printer.
TLC - Edmond students are issued a UCO Student ID card which allows them to use any of the facilities on campus such as the library and computer labs, the UCO clinic, and the Wellness Center which has many state of the art exercise machines.
Edmond, Oklahoma is a community of approximately 75,000. It is located 25 minutes from Oklahoma City, the state capital. Edmond has many beautiful parks, sports facilities and golf courses, and community activities. Edmond has a charming downtown area with many shops and statues. Oklahoma has a very low cost of living. The Eddy, a trolley bus, is Edmond’s public transportation. It has specific stops throughout Edmond and is quite economical to ride.
Oklahoma City is a short 25 minutes from Edmond. There are many points of interest to visit there including the Cowboy Hall of Fame, the stockyards, Bricktown and the canal, the Murah Bomb Site. A trip to Dallas, Texas—a major city in the U.S.-- is only 3 and a half short hours away by car.
You will grow culturally as well as academically. Activities sponsored by The Language Company feature exploring communities and cities where you experience the American way of life.
TLC - Edmond activities provide interaction with native speakers while exposing students to American culture. TLC - Edmond's staff plans numerous activities every session that offer social, cultural, and recreational activity options like: Western culture events such as rodeos and Native American festivals; Zoos and parks; Parties, dances, and picnics; Cultural exhibits and museums; Seasonal festivals; Sightseeing, shopping and movies; and Sport events and activities.
A homestay is an American family that welcomes an international student into their home. TLC-Edmond has a long-standing list of people in the community who participate in the homestay program. The minimum student age is 12. The homestays are paid. (See application for fees and monthly charges). In return, students receive a private room, food for 3 meals a day, and transportation to and from school. At times, the food is in the form of a prepared meal and at other times it is food that is available for the student to eat or to prepare.
University housing is available in Edmond on the campus of University of Central Oklahoma. Dormitory rooms are located in the center of the UCO campus. Most of the rooms are double-occupancy. The minimum age is 18. There are 19 meals per week, including the weekend. Dormitories are available to TLC-Edmond students year around, pending availability.
