Mercyhurst University is a fully accredited, four-year, Catholic, liberal arts institution founded in 1926 by the Sisters of Mercy, who worked hard to make the college and the Erie, Pennsylvania, community a better place. Today, Mercyhurst has evolved considerably. The university is home to more than 3,000 undergraduate and graduate students immersed in more than 50 undergraduate majors, as well as unique adult programs and nine graduate degrees.

The Mercyhurst campus is a sprawling green oasis with old-growth foliage and traditional architecture, located on a picturesque hillside crowning the city. The campus includes dormitories, a church, bookstore, a recreation center, sports fields, and ample parking. The campus is located just 20 minutes from downtown Erie. Mercyhurst's main 75-acre campus is set in Erie, the state's only port city; the campus is approximately 100 miles from Cleveland, Ohio, and Buffalo, New York, and 130 miles north of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Erie is one of Pennsylvania's largest cities and the Commonwealth's only Great Lakes Port. With just over 100,000 residents, Erie is one of the largest cities in Pennsylvania and has most of the offerings you’d expect of a city its size. Erie is strategically located within 500miles of half the nation's population. Whether it is by rail, road, air or water the location allows easy access to many neighboring cities.

Affordable housing, short commutes and miles of beautiful beaches make Erie a great place to live and raise a family. There is a AA baseball team. the Erie Seawolves and an Ontario Hockey League Team, the Otters both calling downtown home. There are many museums, a symphony, and ballet. For outdoor enthusiasts, locals enjoy fishing on Lake Erie, bicycle riding along miles of waterfront, water parks, and leisure time on one of the many sandy beaches, including Presque Isle State Park.

We encourage students to jump start their collegiate experience by getting connected to campus! Whether you join a club or organization, attend campus activities, participate in intramurals, partake in the various athletic and cultural events on campus, or get involved in a variety of service and leadership events, regardless of how you choose to get involved, we are confident you will find your place at Mercyhurst University.

The Mercyhurst University Recreation Center was built to provide each student the opportunity to enhance their physical well-being, within the realm of their academic challenges. This recreation center was designed with the intent of meeting the recreational, fitness, and athletic needs of the students, faculty, and intercollegiate teams of Mercyhurst University.

Housing and Dining

Mercyhurst offers students a variety of living options, from rooms in traditional residence halls to on-campus apartments shared with friends. Living on campus has its perks – from impromptu pick-up games of volleyball on the sand court to quickly being able to enjoy late-night treats from the Laker Inn. No matter where you are living, every student is equipped with their own desk, chair, bed, dresser, access to cable and wifi, and free laundry facilities in each building. Freshmen at Mercyhurst have three living options available:

  • Baldwin Hall, an all-female residence hall
  • McAuley Hall, an all-male residence hall
  • Warde Hall, which houses both males and females

At Mercyhurst University, the main focus is students and guests. Each day they strive to create unique dining solutions for those served. Mercyhurst prepares fresh foods with a healthy balance and offers contemporary culinary choices in an exciting new environment to all that they serve on the Mercyhurst University campus. Two dining halls, a coffee bar, and a quick-stop shop are available for food purchases.

First year residential students will choose from one of the three required meal plans offered. Meal plans are option for upper graduate students.

Mercyhurst University offers 24 varsity level sports, with the Lakers fielding teams in 12 women’s sports and 12 men’s sports. Two of the programs compete at the NCAA Division I level (men’s and women’s ice hockey), while 21 teams participate on the Division II stage.
